Our Bodies Without Organs Ourselves, 2015, single channel video (5:18)
with Douglas Paulson and Joanna Seitz
Medical moleskin is visually grafted on flesh and their world of object relations is mady fleshy. This work troubles binaries of healthy/sick, male/female, and redefines boundaries of interior and exterior. The piece serves as a reflection on interdependency and care, specifically surrounding Downey's top surgery recovery. The collaborative nature of the video, with its screen acting as new skin, embodies repair and recovery.
This work’s title spoofs on the classic feminist volume Our Bodies Ourselves and Deleuze and Guattari’s text Bodies Without Organs. The former offers information about the working of primarily cisgendered women's health while the latter destabilizes our understanding of body or self by extending the body into virtual, unstable dimensions with ever-changing potential flows in all directions.
